Species - The Hive

The Hive are unique among the Galaxy's denizens.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The Hive can colonize anything except airless, frozen asteroids. They compete directly with everyone except the Sprnadoi for real estate. Their military equipment is primitive. They make up for in numbers what they lack in technology. It is not uncommon to come across a Hive system with 6 or 7 planets colonised.

The Hive do not make Marines
Facility costs are fairly high, although there are some Colony Improvements in Eras 4 and 5 which help.
Hull Types are very restricted; there's only one of each size. There are plenty of weapons mounts and shield slots.
All Shields are weak. A big improvement is available in Era 6.
Propulsion systems are poor. They don't get better.
Astro-Navigation is weak in early Eras but improves from Era 5.
ECM systems are terrible. Era 6 yields a major improvement.
Offensive Projectiles are limited and not very good. Military Improvement in Eras 8 makes a big difference.
Defensive Projectiles are hardly worth bothering with, and they stay that way.
Beam Weapons are poor to start with but an improvement in Era 8 beefs them up.
Military Improvements are few but do make a difference.
Colony Improvements are even fewer, but again make a difference.
SP costs for Era jumps are average.
The Hive are incapable of making diplomatic overtures in all stand-alone and campaign scenarios; nor will it respond favourably to same. Diplomacy is out! Trade is out!
Base Rate of Fire is 30. Ordinary.
