1) Avoid areas favourable for a defense, such as densely wooded areas or swamps. Flank those areas with mobile units instead and move a screening force of infantry in to kill off the isolated Soviet forces later.
2) A concentrated Panzer punch can't be stopped, no matter what the Soviets bring to the battle. As long as you bring enough mobile units, you will always break through.
3) Keep a constant eye on casualties. German unit VP's are high and the mobile units are pretty weak in terms of steps. You can lose a Panzer division without too much difficulty as it will come back, but losing more than that will slow the advance.
4) Keep in mind that the primary objectives are Smolensk, Rzhev, Vyazma and Kirov. Taking Smolensk in a timely fashion will cripple Soviet VP's, assuming you've also taken Mogilev and Orsha reasonably on time.
5) Avoid overextension. You have some time to win, just keep pressure on the Soviets and avoid spreading your units out in a way that will allow cavalry formations to get behind you.
6) The Soviet Achillesheel in the original version is that most of their units don't come back, so they'll soon be able to face you with a minimal unit density. Try to force the units that do have a life to surrender.
7) Soviet artillery units are basically sitting ducks in the original version due to their minimal OP's, kill them when you can.
