cliffs and heights

Could comeone explain how cliffs and heights influence the gameplay? I didn't find any information in the manual.

If I remember correctly this feature was first introduced in Battlefront.

Here's what I recall from memory on the Battlefront scenarios:

1) Cliff is a hex-side feature (similar to a major river along a hex-side).

2) Cliff-side had effect on movement (yes w/penalty or not possible for a given unit type to be able to cross) and a major effect on combat.

My memory is a little fuzzy on the impact of height settings. Probably best to let someone else take a crack at that game aspect.
