Combat results question?

Postby jjdenver » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:47 am

I'm in a PBEM game of Konrad and launched a Soviet assault on a German hex in Budapest.

The results on the CRT showed no losses. Defensive fire cause 1 loss.

But it appears that defender took 3 losses, and attacker 1. How were the 3 defender losses caused?

Retreat losses, due to stacking limits preventing retreat I'd guess.

Also, as a note on your defensive line: I'd suggest not going for a "hold the line" strategy, but for a mobile defense strategy where you let the Axis come to you on clear terrain and then attacking them with strong mobile units. Holding a line would be similar to fighting on his terms and it will make it more difficult to attack later on as more Axis units will be alive. In my final test game with Pete, few Axis units were left by the end of the game.

You can pretty much cripple the German advance in the east near Szekesfehervar in one turn if your opponent advances towards your positions in rough terrain and remains on clear hexes.

You’re screen shot shows 4 defenders. After the combat the defenders have:

2 steps

2 steps

No steps

No steps

However this is not possible because the unit with the most number of steps will always take the next step loss. ( if 2 units have the same number of steps then one with the lowest defensive value).

If a unit has 2 steps it’s not possible for another unit to lose all steps.
I think it’s a bug which I already reported.

Not a bug, Joe, all units that can not retreat have the possibility of losing a step due to an attrition die roll. 3 out of the 4 units lost a step because of not being able to retreat when required to retreat.

Just to add a minor note to this discussion.

When required to take attrition while attempting to retreat and failing to do so;

HQ's will never lose a step.
Units in the red or sub standard units will automatically lose a step.
Elite units have a 30% chance of taking a lose.
Normal units have a 50% chance of taking a lose.

I know that any individual combat can seem to have strange results and I have checked out many that have, luckily, been saved before the event. I do believe that the above is the result of a retreat situation but would never offer a guarantee until I can investigate the combat personally.
