Nope. I think just get the arty organised plus get any local reserves to what you might consider weak points or places that should be held. Otherwise just follow the general guidance i posted earlier and we will wait and see what develops from Fritz over the first day of operations, hopefully it will make the German strategy a bit clearer.

Gen Katukov has completed manouevres as requested. One or two bunkers in the line have taken a pounding from Fritz arty, but the red horders calmly occupy the line and await the onslaught. German 75mm Inf Gun has been hit but not destroyed.

Files sent direct to Talos as I don't have a web site to post them too I'm afraid. Hope this works ok.

REPORT of General Chistyakov, commander of 6th Guards Army

4 July 1943 22:00
Germans
German artillery forces opened fire for ten minutes. One strong point has been succesfully hit.
German forces (1LSS, 2SS, 3SS and 168) advanced 4 kilometers to the Stroitel-Kiselevo front

Image

while (19 and 6 Panzer) advanced 6 kilometers to the Khokhiovo-Meikhovo front.

Image

Russians

A counter artillery fire has been ordered only to the Khokhiovo-Meikhovo front.
Recon units moved to identify german forces.
IG Coy/429 Inf Regt has been spotted and succesfully destroyed. Prisoners captured and questioned

Image

67, 71 and 90 Guard Rifle Divisions have been ordered to move as quickly as possible to the front. Arrival estimate 12 to 36 hours.
No Luftwaffe activities

5 July 1943 04:30
Germans

Germans launched a massive artillery bombardment. Many strong points have been destroyed

Image

Information obtained from the prisoners which were captured late at night suggest that 90% of German forces are commited to the frontal attack. Little or no reserve is being held.
Stroitel and Meichovo are the main targets as can be seen from air inderdiction.

Russians

Careless moves at Khokhiovo-Meikhovo front give to our forces a very good chance of destroying one unit and cripple another two

Image

At 5:30 a general meeting was held in order to obtain a plan of defense. Among many which have been proposed Generals Ibyansky (commander of 22 Guards corps) was accepted. This is a two step plan. In the first one, all available artillery must move forward and entrench at about 4 kilometers north to Stroitel city.

Image

These artillery pieces will be part of a major counter attack near Stroitel city in order to hold the German advance. At the same time 67, 71, 90 Guards Rifle and 183 Rifle Division will advance as can be seen bellow

Image

The bigest problem is the arrival of 90 Division. In case of being delayed, the attack will be held from the rest of the forces and the division can be used from General Katukov

End of report

To General Vatutin Commander of Voronezh Front:

1. I need a confirmation of my plan. 183 Rifle Division must be given to my disposal. I am aware of the danger of an early counter attack but the situation is imminent. The psycological effect of a succesfull counter attack will make the Germans to re-evaluate their strategy and give as time to prepare our defence.

2. 93 and 92 Divisions remained at their position

Image

while in some places the front is beginning to break. Thus, it is essential to issue an order to move them as quickly as possible where they are needed the most. The situation is critical.

To: All Army Commanders

From: Front HQ (General Vautin)

After having looked at the situation and the intelligence we have available I have decided to authorise the counter attack and positioning of troops as proposed by General Vhistyakov, Commander 6th Guards Army. 183rd RD is transfered to your command, in addition the rail transport that is available is also at your disposal to help move troops to the front as quickly as possible.

General Katukov, 1st Tank Army you are directed to try and hold the first defensive live. Use infantry where possible to hold the line (at break through points) and use your tanks in direct fire mode to try and pick off German units.

General Kruchenkin, 69th Army though the enemy is attacking along your front, it is having less of an impact so far than on the other two army fronts. You are to continue with general orders as discussed previously and use the arty where possible in counter battery fire, but before this make sure its dug in on the trench line. In addition you are free to make local counter attacks if you think the local situation warents it. In addition the 31st RD is transfered to your command (which is already on the move) to take the place of 183rd.

In addition there 2 mine detachments available for use, would Generals Vhistyakov and Katukov please think about where to place them. The Red Air Force is also sorteeing this morning and we have available 1 air strike and 1 interdiction, would suggest the air strike is used on the 1st LSSAH Werfer arty at 35,66, but open to other suggestions if army commanders can see a better target. Air interdiction is assigned to General Vhistyakov to use as he deems fit.

Order of movement will be.

6th Guards Army, General Vhistyakov
1st Tank Army, General Katukov
69th Army, General Kruchenkin

General Katukov - 1st Tank Army

Orders received. Supplies aren't getting through to front line units, some repositioning of AA required. We will continue to defend from the front line, but after the bunkers are destroyed, which is imminent, the annihilation of our 'human resources' could be quite horrific.

General Chistyakov, commander of 6th Guards Army

To General Vatutin Commander of Voronezh Front:

1. The attack started at 06:00 with artillery firing for 15 minutes from Stroitel-Meikhovo front.

Image

3 out of 7 hits.

213 Rifle Division has been ordered to attack 6 Panzer division South of Meikhovo. 262 Tank Regiment and 27 Guards Tank were placed late at night in order to take action on the morning.

Image

The order to move was given at 06:15. At 06:45 the enemy was identified and a major Tank battle started with both sides firing respectively.

Image

No major loses for both sides. At the same time General Vaslienko ordered all available infantry units from 213 Rifle Division to leave their fortified positions and move to the hills encircling three regiments of 6 Panzer Division.

Image

The enemy was in very difficult situation where he was been attacked from four different directions. The loses were terrific. One unit destroyed and the rest cripled to the point that they are out of order for 1-2 days. After the attack all units were ordered to return to their fortified positions.

Stroitel-Kiselevo front: At 08:00 General Vaslienko after the succesfull attack to 6 Panzer ordered II and III/1529 Tank regiments of 15 Guards Rifle Division to move and hit the remainings of 19 Panzer in order to slow them down. As an addition air inderdiction was placed to this area.

Image

the rest of the 15 Guards were entrenched infront of the river where it was identified that the front was weak and needed to be reinforced.

Image

The rest of the Stroitel-Kiselevo front remained the same.

67, 71 Guards Rifle and 183 Rifle Division have arrived to the front. These divisions will be active the next 6 to 12 hours. 90 Division is still far away. It is propably been used as a reserve.

Image

2. I totally agree with the airstrike.

3. I don't need the two mines, so they can be used from the other Generals.

To: Comrade General of the Army Nikolai Fyodorovich Vatutin, Commander Voronezh Front

From: Comrade General-Lieutenant Victor Dimitrivich Kruchenkin, Commander 69th Army

Subject: Situation Report and Battlefield Appreciation, as at (turn 2).

The 69th Army has been attacked along the front held by 78th Guards and 73rd Guards Rifle Divisions. The enemy has not penetrated our defensive line, however some units are very close with strongpoints destroyed particularly in the 73rd Guards sector.

HQ 69th Army remains located in Bolshoye Gorodishche, and from this location command and control can be exerted over 69th Army's forces.

69th Army has passed 183rd Rifle Division to 6th Guards Army and has assumed responsibility for 31st Rifle Division.

The main area of concern is in the division boundary between 73rd Guards and 78th Guards, where II/131 Guards Rifle Regt and III/343 Guards Rifle Regts have lost their strongpoints, and are out of suppy.

Image

The enemy identified in front of 78th Guards has been identified as 7th Panzer and 106th Infantry Divisions, while 161st Infantry and 282nd Infantry Divisions are assaulting the 73rd Guards positions.

Image

In order to bolster the defences of the two embattled battalions, an AT Coy has been moved to II/131 position and III/343 has the support of a recon company. In the process, the recon company discovered elements of XXXXII Corps to our front.

Other moves incuded moving III/29 Guards to block the river crossing and be in a position to support either of these battalions in he coming hours.

Image

In order to relieve pressure two fire missions were called upon elements of the German 161st Infantry with mixed success.

No further moves of 73rd or 78th Rifle Divisions were ordered.

31st Rifle Division was ordered to move with all speed to occupy the defensive line vacated by 183rd Rifle Division.

Image

Apart from some minor local moves, all other 69th Army forces remain in position.

We wait in anticipation of the fascists exhausting themselves against our defence and then moving to the offensive.

Urrah!

Just had an update from AGS and should expect our next turn in a couple of days as one of the German commanders decided to take a short vacation from the front.
