All first and second line units are available for immediate release under the respective army commands and all arty units.

All requests for Front assets (shock attacks, air attacks, mines and interdictions) should be made to the front commander prior to any moves for the day.

Strategic Appreciation

Though we have intel that the Germans are preparing a major summer offensive in this are of the front, we can not pinpoint the location of the attack nor all the attacking forces through is expected to include the elite SS units. We have powerful reserves available which will be released as needed to stem the German advance or to be used in a counter attack.

General Orders.

1) Stay put in out strong defensive positions for as long as possible.
2) Arty will concentrate on counter battery fire where possible against German arty.
3) Arty where possible are to b positioned inside defensive bunkers and entrenched
4) Rear area arty to be brought forward to the 2nd defensive belt in preparation for use.
5) If forced to retreat across rivers make sure bridges are destroyed once the last retreating unit is across.
6) Use recon units in the front line to help pinpoint specific units and arty

If any of the Army Commanders have any additional intel or appreciation of enemy intentions please post. Once the German attacks start updated orders will be issued.

1) Doggie 69th Army and 6th Guards Army
2) Noakesy 1st Tank Army
3) Valter 7th Guards Army
4) Talos Vorozenh Front

It seems i got my armies mixed up.

1) Doggie 69th Army
2) Noakesy 1st Tank Army
3) Valter 6th Guards Army
4) Talos Vorozneh front (Plus 7th Guards initially)

It seems the 7th Guards sits out to the NE and is not in the initial line, I will be allocating units out of this Army both to Valter and Doggie and it will also be use as a reserve for the front in General. If either Valter or Doggie wish to use any of these forces initially to bolster there defensive lines please let me know.

Longer term if the there is a major central push by German forces the object will be to attack on the flanks, and with that in mind infantry units will be allocated to the 1st Tank Army as they become available so that the more mobile units can be pulled out of the defensive lines and used for counter attacks.

My report as the central general commander is going to be divided in two parts. The first one apply to the forces that are going to be used for defending the center and the second one is about the German attack it self.

The initial defending line consists of the: 89, 15, and 213 Guard Rifle divisions. 15 and 213 will be taken imminently from 7th army.

Image

Image

67 Guard Rifle which is positioned in the second line of defense will move as the picture illustrate to close the little opening near Stroitel where I am expecting the attack to be headed while 71 plus 15 and 183 is going to perform a counter attack.

Image

213 I believe can hold their position.

The German attack in my sector (my prediction) is shown below

Image

Image

If the attack is successful then the center front will be as follows.

Image

Image

This must be prevented at all costs. The most dangerous is attacks number 1 and 2. A counter plan for these attacks is illustrated bellow.
While the Germans will advance and reach near Stroitel forces 15 and 183 will attack at the right flank of the Germans. 71 Guard Rifle will stay in their initial positions in front of the river not behind it, this is very important. That is why these forces must arrive at the right time otherwise if the Germans make their defense behind the small river it is difficult to perform the plan.

Image

These are my initial plans. Waiting for approval.

From: Front Commander

Your General Plan is approved plus the release of the 7th Guards Army Units. In Addition the 94 Guards Rifle By Korcha on the east side of the map in the 3rd defensive line is also released to your command to replace the 67th Guards Rifle in defensive positions.

To: Comrade General of the Army Nikolai Fyodorovich Vatutin, Commander Voronezh Front

From: Comrade General-Lieutenant Victor Dimitrivich Kruchenkin, Commander 69th Army

Subject: Situation Report and Battlefield Appreciation, as at 6pm July 4th 1943.

The 69th Army has occupied its defensive positions along and between the Korema and Korocha Rivers.

The Army's five rifle divisions and supporting elements are ready to implement your orders to assure the destruction of the enemy forces by means of a stubborn defence.

69th Army's divisions are located in second echelon positions, with 7th Guards Army units occupying the bulk of the defensive positions in the first echelon.

Image

HQ 69th Army remains located in Bolshoye Gorodishche, and from this location command and control can be exerted over 69th Army's forces.

The vital ground in 69th Army's sector has been identified as the river crossing over the Korema River at Nikolskoye, with key terrain being the river crossings at Shebekino, Belyanki, and the crossing of the Razumnaia River to the west of Zayache.

Enemy intentions will be to breach the first echelon of defense and quickly sieze the river crossings in order to provide operational freedom of movement east or north.

Individual division missions as follows:

1. 107th Rifle Division is to hold the river crossing at Nikolskoye and be prepared to support 7th Guard Army forces operating to the west in the first echelon.

2. 305th Rifle Division is to occupy second echelon defensive postions to the north of Nekkludove and prevent enemy breakthrough to the river. They are to support 107th Rifle Division on their left flank and be prepared to go to the offensive to support 7th Guards units operating in the first echelon.

3. 111th Rifle Division is to occupy second echelon defensive positions to the south of Nikolskoye and be prepared to support 107th Rifle Division in defense of the river crossing. They are also to be prepared to support 7th Guards Army units operating in the first echelon.

4. 270th Rifle Division is to occupy second echelon defensive positions defending the crossing of the Neshegol River and prevent enemy flanking manoevers on the Army's left flank. They are to be prepared to support 7th Guards Army units operating in the first echelon.

Image

5. 183rd Rifle Division is to occupy second echelon defensive positions between the Razumnaia and Northern Donets rivers. They are to be prepared to support elements of 7th Guards Army operating forward of their positions or 6th Guards Army units on their right (northern) flank. They are to ensure the enemy does not force a crossing of the Razumnaia River (currently held by 201st Tank Brigade of 15th Guards Rifle Division).

Image

Force Regrouping: None required at this moment. 69th Army lacks any armoured or mechanised forces, and should it be required to conduct offensive operations requiring the use of armour, it will need to be allocated these assets.

Area of Concern: The crossing of the Razumnaia River south of 183rd Division's location is held by 201st Tank Brigade, which has only one regiment of Infantry. It may be possible to move either the 84th or 91st Guards Rifle Divisions to cover this crossing with stronger infantry forces and to move 201st Tank Brigade into 7th Guards or 69th Army Reserve.

We are ready to receive your orders, Comrade General.

Urrah!

Historical Note on 69th Army

The 69th Army was allocated the task of Front Reserve. Vatutin had determined that the most probable enemy attack axes would be Belgorod-Oboian, Belgorod - Korocha, Volchansk and Novyi Oksol. On 5th July 69th Army lost 111th and270th Rifle Divisions to 7th Guards Army.

Subject: 183rd Rifle Division

Comrade General in Command of 6th Guards Army has indicated the use of 183rd Rifle Division of the 69th Army in his counter-attack plans. Can I confirm that the 183rd will be transferred to 6th Guards should the plan be activated?

This is confirmed if the counter-attack plan is activated the 183rd Rifle Division will transfer to the 6th Guards. If this happens the 31st Rifle Division will be released from 3rd echelon as a replacement unit. 78th and 73rd Guards Rifle Divisions of the 25th Guards Rifle Corps and Corps assets will now fall under 69th Army Control.

Release of further reserves will wait on German operations. Initial operations are confirmed to stand and hold until an appreciation of German intentions becomes clear.

It maybe the Armoured reserves will be released to the 69th Army for counter-attack in conjunction with operations by 1st Tank Army.

81st Guards Rifle Division will act as 69th Army Reserve, but is not yet released to 69th Army command.

Fellow Comrades of the Voronezh Front,
