Right, US artillery alone cannot make for a successful counterattack if the Germans get far and in good order. The elite unit you were attacking was probably flanked by other good units, within divisional radius (so you were attacking a division really) and possibly backed by defensive artillery. If you take those away, i.e. the unit is sticking out on its own, the odds go up quickly due to attacking at multiple sides, etc.

But yeah, if the Germans do well early on then they'll win. As for the US not having enough units to slow the Germans down, I guess it depends on what you're trying to do. And yeah, it's not good if you're losing a lot of units early on. Then again, you can't afford to just keep running away, because then the Germans will achieve the game-winning organized advance. I think the US needs to do different things in different sectors, and adapt to the Germans' play. It's a complex game! It's just begging for a strategy article/guide, no?
