Mon 20Oct 2003 | Assault on Port Stanley

Here is a screen shot of the 2nd Battle that I am working on for the Korsun Pocket engine - 'Attack on Port Stanley'.

Simulating the final drive in the Falklands War by the British on the Argentine troops, with the Attack on Port Stanley. This battle, similar to the Bastogne Battle that I am working on, is based upon the SSG scenario "Task Force South" for their old Battlefront Engine (C64).

The scenarios/battles that I have chosen to create have been picked for specific purposes. I chose the Bastogne scenario first off to see how the KP engine would handle a scenario at the Battalion level - I picked Bastogne as people will already be familar with this battle from the Ardennes Offensive Campaign in KP and, also from the Bastogne scenario from TAO/TAO2 (which we also intend to port at the Regimental/Divisional level later).

I am pleased to report that the engine actually does handle combat quite well at this scale, and Im sure people will find the battle/scenario quite thrilling - I hope to be in a position to release it in a week or two, as it is going through its final testing now.

I selected the Falklands War as the setting for my second scenario to demonstrate how the KP engine may handle a 'modern' battle. Whilst I have had to be innovative in terms of some tweaking (for example to address massive Air and Naval Support) - and with some great support from Roger at SSG - who has also been willing to make some slight modifications to the Scenario Editor to also assist with the development of this scenario - Im confident that the port of this scenario will also be quite successful.

I hope, when the scenario is released that it will confirm how powerful the KP engine is in simulating not only 'decisive battles from WWII' but also those from more recent times. There is even scope for some Korean and Vietnam War battles to be created for this engine - Im pretty confident that it will handle it quite well.

The next scenario - already thinking ahead, I plan to port from the stack of Run5 magazines I have, is a battle - that is quite famous in my part of the world - from World War I. And thats Gallipolli. The attempted Allied invasion of Turkey in the Great War.

I am specifically looking to do this scenario next, not only because I am an Aussie and they featured in the battle - but also as the other 'book end' to show you how well that this engine can handle battles outside of World War II.

All going well, these 3 scenarios will demonstrate that the only limitations to the scenario's that someone wants to create using the Korsun Pocket editor, is that which is limited by their imagination only.

This, like your Bastogne looks awesome. Cant wait to fight the Argies as I still remember this war vividly and have not seen it done before.

I imagine the terrain will play big factor in this scenatrio too?

I thought this one would be a bit interesting, considering that most of us probably lived through it one way or another.

Yes the terrain will play a bit part.. the British need to advance down through the high ground across mountains and ridges - and take the hills which have been assigned as objectives that overlook Stanley, before they move on for the final liberation. This scenario is still in its early days and it probably a month or so away..

Impressive! The map looks awesome - like a satellite image.
Can you estimate how much time it took you to create your scenarios?

It really isnt taking me much time at all to create the scenarios, what takes the longest time is believe it or not, is the fine tuning to make the game balanced and play right.

With this Falklands one, all up to get it to this stage - where it is playable but not balanced, it probably took me 5-6 hours worth of work all up.

Most people think that the map is the hardest thing to do, I have found a neat knack of doing them in photoshop which makes it really really easy.. and the more I do it, of course the better I get.

I have sampled some of the terrain types that SSG have used in their maps, and I use them as 'patterns' in photoshop. If people are interested I will do a tutorial on it. I had better check with SSG and see if they are ok with me releasing my patterns that I stole from their maps though :)

Heck yea!

Rob please do the tutorial you mentioned. That would be great. I've thought about making Finnish civil war scenario of battle of Tampere 1918. Tampere is my hometown and I basicly live on a top of those battle sites. I deem the map as the hardest part to come up right. Also I think I wait some other fellows make some WW1 era scenarios before I even try it since Im new to scenario making.
